5 Simple Desk Upgrades That Save Me Time and Keep Me Organized

I don't know about you, but when my desk gets messy, somehow my brain feels messy too.

Cords everywhere. Papers piled up. Pens and little office supplies scattered around. And of course, there's always that one thing I know I put somewhere safe — but now I can't find it.

I'm always looking for simple ways to save time and stay organized, but I don't want organizing my office to become another project on my to-do list.

So I went looking for a few easy desk upgrades that could make a real difference without completely redoing my workspace.

Here are five of my favorites.

1. Desktop File Organizer

Paper is probably one of the fastest ways for my desk to go from reasonably organized to complete chaos.

Mail, notes, things I need to deal with later, notebooks — somehow it all ends up in one pile.

A desktop file organizer gives those papers somewhere to go without hiding them so well that I forget they exist.

I especially like having separate spots for things like:

  • Papers I need to deal with
  • Things I need to file
  • Current projects
  • Notebooks and folders

It's a very simple change, but it can make a desk look dramatically better.

2. Drawer Organizer

You know that desk drawer.

Pens. Paper clips. Sticky notes. Scissors. Chargers. Random things you're not even sure why you kept.

A drawer organizer is one of those ridiculously simple things that makes a bigger difference than you'd expect.

Instead of digging through the drawer every time you need something, everything has its own little spot.

And I'm much more likely to put something back when it actually has a place to go.

3. Under-Desk Cable Management

This one may not sound exciting, but hear me out.

Cords can make an otherwise organized workspace look messy.

Computer cords, chargers, power strips and all those mystery cables seem to multiply under a desk.

An under-desk cable tray lets you get the cords and power strip off the floor and hide the cable mess underneath the desk.

Besides looking better, it also makes cleaning around the desk easier.

4. Label Maker

Your desk might not actually be messy.

Maybe nothing has a home yet.

That's where a label maker comes in.

Once you decide where something belongs, label it.

Label it. Put it away. Find it again.

You can use labels for:

  • File folders
  • Storage bins
  • Desk drawers
  • Cords and chargers
  • Office supplies
  • Craft supplies
  • Household paperwork

And yes, there is a very good chance I could get carried away with a label maker.

But if labeling something saves me from searching for it later, I'm calling that time management.

5. Productivity Timer

This might be my favorite of the five because it combines organization with actually getting things done.

The idea is simple:

25 minutes. One task. GO!

Flip the timer.

Put down the phone.

Pick one thing.

Get it done.

Sometimes the hardest part of a task is simply getting started. Telling myself I only have to work on something for 25 minutes makes it feel much more manageable.

This type of timer has preset times, so you don't have to mess around setting a timer every time you want to use it.

It's useful for work, cleaning, organizing, writing, paperwork — pretty much anything you've been putting off.

A Few Simple Updates Can Make a Big Difference

I don't think you need a perfectly organized Pinterest-worthy office to be productive.

You just need your workspace to work for you.

A place for your papers.

A place for all the little stuff.

Cords out of the way.

Labels so you can actually find things again.

And maybe a timer to convince yourself to finally start that thing you've been avoiding.

None of these changes is huge on its own.

But together?

Less clutter. Less searching. More focus. More time.
